The Knotting Face shows the process of filling white face with the red ink by repeatedly putting a thumbprint on the face. There is no identical face in the world. In other words, the face is the only means to distinguish a person and reflects on person’s identity. People are born, grow, and socialize. Socialization is based on the interaction between individuals and surroundings through language. In this process, individuals adapt to the environment by confirming or fighting against the surrounding environment.

In this work, the socialization process of individuals is reflected in the act of putting a thumbprint on the face, and the process of coloring face with the red ink is embodied in the form of making a knot. This knot resembles the concept of a seal. On the other hand, the socialization is the process of unifying individuals as a member of the society. However, not everyone turns out to be identical even if they learn the same thing. That is, even when the face is covered with the red ink, still, the unique curve and shape remains in each face. Only, the color of face can be unified. Eventually, what the artwork is trying to say is that even when the face is covered with red ink, the white face may be sealed, however, we do not become the same, but, rather, become ourselves with the red mask. As if we are unified with red color, we only cover and reveal ourselves.

In society, we look at each other’s red face and feel relief, knowing that we are qualified to become a member of society and, at the same time, doubt ourselves to know what is underneath the masks. ​

 

얼굴 매듭 은 얼굴에 반복적으로 지장을 찍으며 하얀 얼굴이 붉은색 얼굴로 채워지는 과정을 보여준다. 사회화는 언어를 통해 개인과 주변이 상호작용하며 이뤄지고, 개인은 이 과정에서 주변과 순응하거나 투쟁하며 적응해간다. 이 작업에서 개인의 사회화 과정은 지장을 얼굴에 찍는 모습으로 투영했고, 얼굴에 붉은색 인주가 채워지는 과정을 매듭이 지어지는 것으로 형상화했다. 이 매듭은 봉인의 개념과 닿아있다. 다른 한편으로, 사회화는 개인을 사회의 일원으로 획일화시키는 과정이기도 하다. 하지만 모든 사람이 같은 것을 배우더라도 같아지지는 않을 것이다. 즉, 얼굴이 붉은색 인주로 다 덮인다고 해도 얼굴 고유의 굴곡은 남게 된다. 단지, 얼굴의 색만이 붉은색으로 획일화된 것이다. 작품에서 궁극적으로 말하고자 하는 것은 붉은색 인주가 얼굴을 다 덮어 본연의 하얀 얼굴은 봉인했을지 모르지만, 우리는 같아지지 않고 여전히 붉은색 가면을 쓴 내가 됐을 뿐이다. 오히려 붉은색의 모습으로 획일화된 것처럼 나를 포장하고 노출할 뿐이다.

우리는 사회에서 서로 붉은색 얼굴을 보며, 사회의 일원이 될 수 있는 자격이 있는 것에 안도하며 동시에 가면을 쓰고 있는 서로를 보며 가면 아래에는 무엇이 있는지에 대해 의심하며 사는 것 같다.​
